AC Milan, a club in the top tier of Italian football, Serie A is collaborating with BitMEX, a cryptocurrency exchange and derivative trading platform, to launch its own official non-fungible token (NFT) project, with the proceeds from the sale going to charity.

The Italian club has also teamed up with Fansea, formerly My Football Space, which brings “real life memorabilia from sports and entertainment into the digital world”, for this NFT project.

The club is putting on sale 3D NFTs of an AC Milan jersey found in South Sudan. The jersey from the 2016/17 season was discovered by the Danish war photographer Jan Grarup during a trip to South Sudan, to document the effects of severe flooding in the country at the time.

Fondazione Milan, which supports charitable initiatives across the globe, including its efforts to help alleviate the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, will be receiving the NFT funds.

BitMEX discounts

BitMEX has pledged a donation to Fondazione Milan as well as offering the first 10,000 fans who pre-order the NFTs additional discounts and other benefits on BitMEX.com.

The 3D NFT will cost €45 ($49), with 75,817 available to purchase, representing the number of spectators AC Milan’s San Siro stadium can hold.

The NFTs will be available to buy from the 14 April. A “special” 3D NFT will go on sale on the Fansea app on 29 April.

‘This is a special moment for the club’

Casper Stylsvig, chief revenue officer at AC Milan said: “This is a special moment for the club as it embarks on a journey in a new territory in the name of charity. It is in AC Milan’s nature to explore new innovative ways to engage with its international fanbase of over 500 million people, whilst spreading the positive values of sport, so we are proud to be able to combine these two different sides of our club into one project.”

Alexander Schlicher, the founder and chief executive of Fansea, said: “As part of this special charity project in collaboration with one of the most iconic clubs in the world, we share a passion for sport and want to take our part of responsibility to help disadvantaged people and children. With this first non-profit NFT, AC Milan is breaking new ground and will be supported by BitMEX as well as Fansea in the future."
