Club Atlético River Plate, a football team that plays in Argentina’s Primera División (the country’s top league), has partnered with Chiliz, the global blockchain provider for the sports industry, and will be unveiling a new Fan Token via fan engagement and reward app, Socios.com.

River Plate are the reigning Argentinian champions, with 36 league titles and more than 10 international trophies, including four South American Football Confederation’s Copa Libertadores and a FIFA Intercontinental Cup.

The $RIVER Fan Token will give the club’s estimated 20 million global fans “the chance to engage with and influence the club like never before”. Supporters of the football team who purchase the $RIVER Fan Token will be able to take part in polls that can help decide kit designs, squad numbers for signings, celebration songs and other fan-related topics.

Holders of the Fan Token will also have access to exclusive discounts and promotions as well as the chance to earn unique rewards such as signed merchandise, VIP tickets and club-related non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

Socios.com app will allow fans to connect with other fans from around the world and put their skills to the test in games and quizzes, competing in global leader boards, earning real-life and digital club-related rewards.

The launch date of the $RIVER Fan Token is expected to be announced "soon".

River Plate joins a growing network

The Argentinian side joins a network of more than 100 sporting organisations worldwide that have partnered with Chiliz and Socios.com. These include FC Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Manchester City, Juventus, Inter Milan and Arsenal.

Socios.com grew by 500% in terms of partners and clubs in 2021. Currently, the company has headquarters in Buenos Aires, Istanbul, London, Madrid, São Paulo and Seoul, with plans to open its first offices in Italy and the US soon.

‘More than a sponsorship deal’

Alexandre Dreyfus, founder and CEO of Chiliz and Socios.com, said: “We are extremely excited to add another global powerhouse to our roster. River Plate is one of the most iconic sporting brands in Latin America, but also a club followed and admired all over the world.

“We set the bar very high in 2021, but this partnership with River Plate proves that we are not going to settle.”

Jorge Brito, president of River Plate, said: “We are very happy with this agreement, which will see River Plate join global powerhouses such as FC Barcelona, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Inter Milan among others. This is much more than a sponsorship deal for us, it’s an important step that will see River Plate explore the world of digital assets and create a new revenue stream while enhancing the experience of our millions of fans.”
