Fashion chain Christian Dior apologises to China over map error

Company is just the latest international business to incur Beijing’s wrath over status of Taiwan

Christian Dior, the French luxury goods company, has apologised to China for failing to include Taiwan on a map of the nation.

The error occurred in Christian Dior presentation at a recruitment event for a boutique network in the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou, reports Reuters.

Christian Dior was criticised on the Chinese social media site Weibo. “Not a single part of China should be missing!” said one comment. In a statement, the firm said: “Dior has always respected and upheld the principle of one China, strictly upholding China's rights and complete sovereignty, treasuring the feelings of Chinese citizens."

The status of the island of Taiwan, which lies off the Chinese, Japanese and Philippine coasts, is sensitive. Beijing sees the self-ruled island as a province and part of China. Beijing sees Taiwan as an essential part of China, but Taipei (the capital of Taiwan) has long-rejected moves for cross-strait unification, as the South China Morning Post reports.
