Google to hire thousands of full-time staffers

4,000 new customer support employees are set to join the company in 2020 to defy accusations about its 'shadow workforce'

Google has revealed in a blog post that it is going to expand its customer support operations in 2020 by hiring thousands of full-time staffers. The decision comes in the wake of the company being accused of using "shadow workforce".

According to the announcement, more than 4,000 new full-time staffers will join Google in 2020, adding to the 114,000 employees who are currently working full-time for the company.

The new customer support workers will focus on customer phone calls, advertising campaigns, product troubleshooting and more. Google claims they will receive "industry-leading wages and benefits" including three weeks' annual holiday, parental leave and health benefits.

As a part of Google's goal to expand its full-time workforce in the US, the company will open a new facility in Mississippi. Moreover, the corporation is also opening new locations in India and the Philippines in the coming year.

According to multiple reports, Google is heavily relying on temporarily workforce, third-party vendors, and contract workers. The New York Times reported that Google's contract workforce outnumbers its full-time employees at the moment, with 121,000 contractors against 102,000 full-time employees.

The new decision will mark a major restructuring of the company, as well as a significant cost increase.

In August, US senators including former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders urged the company to convert its temporary or contract workers into full-time employees. The current practice of hiring low-cost staff without contracts was classified as an "abuse" of labour law.
