Huawei is one of the world’s biggest technology companies, specialising in telecoms equipment and smartphones.
The Chinese firm originally focused on making phone switches before it began to branch out. In the 2010s, it enjoyed explosive growth – becoming the biggest manufacturer of telecoms equipment worldwide in 2012. Another major milestone came in 2018, when Huawei leapfrogged Apple in terms of smartphone market share – meaning it is second only to Samsung.
Huawei has been instrumental in the development of 5G wireless networks, but the company has suffered setbacks amid allegations that the Chinese government may be using its infrastructure to perform surveillance. The tech giant has also been subject to sanctions by the US, meaning that it has little presence in America when compared with Europe and Asia.
