Ice Cube is ‘down with the DogeArmy’
Ice Cube’s tweet led to the largest commercial transaction ever made with DOGE
American rapper and actor Ice Cube (real name O'Shea Jackson Sr) has shown his support for dogecoin (DOGE) via Twitter.
In response to a tweet from Bill Lee, a founding member of MyDoge wallet, a self-custodial wallet for DOGE, the rapper said he is “down with the DogeArmy”.
Lee’s tweet was responding to Ice Cube’s announcement that rapper Snoop Dogg (real name Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr) is buying two BIG3 teams.
The BIG3 is a 3-on-3 basketball league founded by Ice Cube and entertainment executive Jeff Kwatinetz. The league consists of 12 teams whose rosters include both former National Basketball Association (NBA) players and international players.
‘Incredible and historical’
On the same day as Ice Cube’s tweets the BIG3 announced that Lee had purchased 25 Fire-Tier non-fungible tokens (NFTs) editions of the BIG3 team, the Aliens with DOGE. The rapper described this move as “incredible and historical”.
In April, the BIG3 launched a new ownership model for the league which meant investors could buy tokenised stakes of each of the 12 teams. Each team has 1,000 NFTs in total allocated to it, with 25 Fire NFTs worth $25,000 (£20,249) and 975 Gold NFTs worth $5,000 (£4,049) each.
This was the largest commercial transaction ever made with DOGE.
The Aliens will now feature MyDoge and Dogecoin on the team’s jerseys as well as at events and broadcasts.
‘NFTs with utility are the next frontier’
Regarding the purchase of 25 Fire NFTs, Lee said: “While others are buying NFT images of apes and owls, I believe that NFTs with utility are the next frontier. It is a dream to own a basketball team and the BIG3 is shifting the NFT game by offering ownership rights such as licensing/IP, team voting/management, and merchandising. The Doge Army and I look forward to making Dogecoin the people's currency while helping our team hoist the championship trophy. I can't think of a better NFT experience than that today."
Kwatinetz said: “Having buy-in from Bill, who has done so much in the NFT and crypto world, confirms what we are doing here is a game-changer. We are thrilled to partner up with Bill and have the MyDoge and Dogecoin communities be represented by the Aliens.”
