‘In the Mood for Love’ NFT to be auctioned by Sotheby’s
Hong Kong film director Wong Kar Wai will auction off his first NFT of an unseen footage
Hong Kong film director Wong Kar Wai plans to auction his first non-fungible token (NFT), which features unseen footage from his acclaimed 2000 movie, In the Mood for Love, at Sotheby’s Hong Kong on 9 October.
Sotheby’s Modern Art Evening Sale has described the auction as: “Wong Kar Wai’s first-ever NFT creation, In the Mood for Love – Day One, edited from never-before-seen footage shot on the first production day of the international masterpiece, In the Mood for Love (2000).”
The original film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to critical acclaim, winning the Grand Technical Prize and with Tony Leung awarded Best Actor, the first Hong Kong actor to win the award will be unveiled for the first time.
Wong Kar Wai is internationally renowned for his award-winning films Days of Being Wild (1990), Chungking Express (1994), Happy Together (1997), In the Mood for Love (2000) and The Grandmaster (2013), and has garnered acclaim from audiences and critics alike.
A rare footage
The NFT short film features rare footage of the film’s stars, actors Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung, playing utterly different characters from the iconic lovers as seen in the original film.
The idea of releasing the footage showing the characters playing different roles is to reveal the trajectory of a creative idea as it develops.
Explained Sotheby’s: “This unique artwork celebrates the critical and wondrous moment when a creative idea is first conceived, while marking the first Asian film NFT ever to be offered in international auction houses.”
The Shanghai-born director, commenting on this choice, said: “All creation originates from a single thought. Where did the first thought of ‘In the Mood for Love’ originate from? That is hard to say. However, what is certain is that 13 February 1999 was the first day I put that thought into action.”
Wong added: “The first day of every film production is like the first date with your dream lover – it is filled with fright and delight, like skating on thin ice. An arrow never returns to its bow; 20 years on, this arrow is still soaring.”
