Lufthansa partners with Google Cloud to minimise flight delays

Lufthansa will use Google Cloud’s infrastructure to bring its IT systems and data into a single platform to streamline operations and reduce flight disruption

Lufthansa airlines is partnering with Google’s cloud unit to try and minimise the impact of flight delays and other irregularities on its passengers.

It will use Google Cloud’s infrastructure to bring its IT systems and data – on processes such as aircraft replacement and crew scheduling – into a single platform.

The aim is to make Lufthansa’s operations easier, especially when flights are disrupted due to extreme weather or congestion.

The airline’s staff will use a platform powered by Google’s cloud tech to come up with suggestions for putting its flight plan back on track.

A team of Google software engineers will be onsite with Lufthansa’s IT and operations experts to develop and test the new platform.

Google Cloud’s CEO, Thomas Kurian, described the partnership as a “significant opportunity to revolutionise the future of airline operations.”

Over 145 million passengers flew with the German carrier last year. But it also faced industrial action from cabin crew and other staff, which led to hundreds of flight cancellations.

Google plans to invest €3 billion (£2.56bn, $3.3 bn) aimed at expanding its data centres across Europe and says its cloud business is growing faster in Europe than anywhere else.
