Malaysia aims to attract $2.5 billion in global trade and investments in its net zero carbon initiative

Malaysia’s Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change has started building its “Net Zero Carbon Pavilion” in Expo 2020 Dubai’s 4.38 sq km Sustainability District.

The ministry’s deputy secretary general, Dr Mohd Nor Azman Hassan, said the south-east Asia country aims to attract $2.5 billion (£1.9bn) in potential trade and investments, “capturing 1,000 business leads with 20 memorandums of understanding or partnership agreements” signed during the six-month participation at Expo 2020 Dubai.

The pavilion’s construction is a vital and conscious step towards ensuring that the country’s building and structure will be sustainable in the long term, Malaysia’s Prime Minister Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad said.

This will be done by planting trees and reforesting more of the nation’s land areas.

Malaysia’s current forest cover is at 55.3 per cent, exceeding the country’s initial commitment to the Rio Summit of 50 per cent.

Malaysia’s minister for energy, science, technology, environment and climate change, Yeo Bee Yin al, said the country is also targeting to generate 20 per cent of its electricity from renewable energy sources by 2025. This is up from 2 per cent currently, CNBC reported.
