Teenager brings vaping death toll to 25 in US

By Charlotte Ricca

A 17-year-old boy has died from a vaping-related illness, bringing the total number of deaths caused by e-cigarettes in the United States to 25

The Bronx boy is the first teenager in the US to die of a vaping-related illness – and also New York’s state’s first fatality from the mysterious lung disease.

The most recent death-by-vaping was reported in Utah on Wednesday 9 October. The other 23 deaths have occurred across 19 different states, from California to Connecticut.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 1,080 vaping-related illness had been reported nationwide. The agency has urged people to avoid e-cigarettes with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the chemical responsible for marijuana's psychological effects. It is believed this component may play a role in causing illness.

A shocking 16% of patients are under 18 years old, which has led to a number of US states banning flavoured e-cigarattes, as they encourage vaping in teenagers. These include New York State, San Francisco, Michigan and Rhode Island, Washington and Montana.

Amid the growing reports of vaping-related deaths and lung disease, businesses are also pulling out of the e-cigarette industry. Kroger Co, Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc and Walmart Inc have said they will stop selling vaping products. While Chinese e-commerce firm Alibaba Group Holding Ltd revealed it will stop selling e-cigarette components in the United States.
