Samsung patents new AR headset

A recently unearthed Korean design patent application seems to offer clear evidence that Samsung is considering entering the augmented reality headset market.

The patent, which was spotted by Galaxy Club, shows a headset with two screens – one in each lens – and a cable running down the right side.

If the patent ever becomes a real word product it would mark a sea change for the company, which up until now has focused on virtual reality technology. It launched its Gear VR headset back in 2015 and revamped it a couple of years later.

Interestingly Samsung’s latest handset, the Galaxy Note 10, is the first phone that’s not compatible with Gear VR hardware, causing industry pundits to speculate whether the company was moving on from the format.

A range of manufacturers are rumoured to be working on augmented reality headsets. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently predicted Apple will launch its augmented reality headset early next year, while Facebook confirmed it is working on AR products back in 2018.

A recent report from IDC concluded that total shipments of AR headset will reach 31.9 million units in 2023.
