Toyota's Lexus brand to launch battery-powered electric vehicle next year

Toyota will launch its first all-battery electric Lexus next year, as the luxury brand races to market with a battery-operated vehicle.

Lexus unveiled its “Lexus Electrified” vision for an upcoming generation of electrified vehicles at the 46th Tokyo Motor Show 2019. Toyota said it “targets a fundamental leap in vehicle performance, handling, control and driver enjoyment”.

The Lexus LF-30 Electrified Concept, which made its world debut at the show, will be the Japanese automaker’s first full-sized, battery-operated passenger car.

According to Toyota, the technology of Lexus Electrified enables integrated control of powertrain, steering, suspension and brakes, realising the ultimate potential of the motor-control technology cultivated in hybrid vehicles.

With this technology, Toyota can control the driving force to provide “ideal vehicle posture” according to each driving situation.

By 2025, Lexus plans to have electrified versions of all Lexus vehicle models.

Toyota’s aim is for the sales of electrified vehicles to outpace those of conventional internal combustion engine vehicles.

Since the launch of the RX 400h in 2005, Lexus has been a pioneer in electrification technologies such as the two-stage reduction gear and the multi-stage hybrid system, which leverage technology to offer excellent performance and the direct driving sensation characteristic of Lexus hybrid vehicles.
