First electric taxi launches in London amidst plans to combat pollution

London’s first exclusively electric and emission-free taxi has launched amid city efforts to fight pollution.

The Dynamo taxi, built in Coventry by Dynamo Motor Company, is based on a Nissan e-NV200 Evalia MPV. It can hold five passengers, three forward-facing and two rear-facing, Dynamo revealed.

Dynamo has said it will usually cost less than £30 per week in electricity and will become the “most cost-effective” taxi in the UK.

The driver can charge the taxi at home which for 174 miles will cost about £6. Current diesel taxis cost about £35-£40 to fill.

The Dynamo cab will cost £55,495 but drivers can claim a £7,500 government grant for electric cars against the price. It is the first of its kind since an electric cab was launched in 1899 but failed to take off.

Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, said that the Dynamo is “part of our plan to clean up London’s air”.

London has a £42 million fund in place to help cab drivers make the switch to cleaner, greener vehicles, Mr Khan added.
