EU delays final say on Brexit extension

By Hazel Davis

Decision hangs on results of general election decision

The EU has said it will delay its Brexit extension decision until after the results of a vote on UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s demand for a Christmas general election. However, ambassadors have agreed to the principle of an extension.

The final decision will be made just 48 hours before Britain is due to leave the EU on October 31 but the president of the European council, Donald Tusk, has said he won’t be calling a special summit and the final decision will be made in writing.

The UK opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn has said that the Labour party wants an election but will only vote in favour if the EU grants an extension, thereby preventing a no deal Brexit.

Johnson wants to call the election for December 12 if the EU agrees to an extension to January 31 but needs a two-thirds majority if the Commons vote takes place on Monday October 28 to achieve his election wish. He has denied that the Government could go “on strike” if the opposition refuses to support the election.
