McDonald’s fires CEO after relationship with colleague

By Ramla Soni

Easterbrook replaced by former company USA president Kempczinski

McDonald’s has let go of chief executive officer Steve Easterbrook after violating company policy by having a consensual relationship with a colleague.

The company said that Easterbrook had “demonstrated poor judgment” by engaging in the relationship.

Chris Kempczinski, most recently president of McDonald's USA, has replaced Easterbrook. Kempczinski has also been elected to the McDonald's board of directors.

Easterbrook became CEO of McDonald’s in 2015. Previously he had been chief brand officer and the company’s head in the UK and northern Europe.

McDonald’s confirmed that this change of leadership is unrelated to the company's operational or financial performance.

Joe Erlinger, most recently president of international operated markets, has been appointed in Kempczinski’s place as president of McDonald's USA.

Erlinger will be responsible for the business operations of around 14,000 McDonald's restaurants in the United States.

McDonald's has 38,000 locations in over 100 countries, with more than 1,270 restaurants in the UK.
