Setback for Alphabet self-driving car project Waymo

By Ramla Soni

Business mobility provider to close operations in Austin, Texas, with staff facing relocation

The self-driving technology company Waymo is closing operations in Austin, Texas.

The subsidiary of Google’s parent company Alphabet, formerly known as the Google self-driving car project, is removing employees from the facility and will offer relocation to its production centre in Detroit, or to Phoenix, Arizona, CNBC reported.

The move is said to affect fewer than 10 employees at the business mobility provider, but a number of contractors also worked in Austin. The relocations will not affect other Waymo employees.

Waymo has been facing challenges in its attempt to commercialise self-driving cars. Last month Morgan Stanley cut its valuation on Waymo by 40 per cent from $175bn (£136bn) to $105bn.

Alphabet manages over 138,000 fleet vehicles in the UK. Internationally it operates in 30 countries and manages more than 700,000 vehicles.

This mont, Alphabet expanded its offering to Norway by partnering with leasing expert Auto Plan.
