Disney+ hits 10m sign-ups on first day

Stock surges after streaming service beats all expectations despite technical glitch

The Disney+ streaming service by Disney, officially launched on November 12, gained more than 10m sign-ups in its first day, according to the company.

Disney stock rose 7.5 per cent on November 13, closing at $149 (£116.07, €135.27).

The streaming service offers a wide range of movies, including Disney and Pixar cartoons, Marvel and Star Wars, and many more. It went live with one of the most anticipated releases of the season, The Mandalorian, set in the Star Wars universe five years after the events of Return of the Jedi.

However the launch was beset by major technical issues, as the company underestimated demand. Many users complained on social media that it was impossible to watch the films properly. Disney later claimed to have fixed the problem, blaming a third party provider.

Disney+ is currently available in the US, Canada, and the Netherlands on the web, iOS, Android, Roku, various smart TVs and Amazon Fire TV. Subscriptions cost $6.99 (£5.45, €6.34) a month or $69.99 per year.
