Tesla unveils futuristic Cybertruck with its initial model priced at $40K

By Yana Berman

Production is set to begin late 2021

co-founder and CEO Elon Musk presented a new electric car called Cybertruck during a company event in Los Angeles on Thursday, November 21. The presentation was live-streamed on YouTube.

The new vehicle has a Blade Runner-inspired design that Musk himself marked as his “personal favourite” among other models. The entrepreneur also tweeted that he took into account Lotus Esprit S1 from the James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me.

The starting price for the truck will be $39,900 (£30.8K, €36K), and its production is set to start late 2021. The pre-order is already available on Tesla's website.

During the presentation Musk revealed that Cybertruck will be available in three models. The cheapest RWD one will come with a single motor, with its estimated range reaching 250 miles. According to Musk, it will reach 60 mph in less than 6.5 seconds.

A dual-motor AWD model worth $49,900 will be able to run 300 miles, while a tri-motor top model for $69,900 has a 500+ miles range and goes from 0 to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds. The production of a tri-motor Cybertruck is likely to be postponed till 2022. A self-driving option will add $7,000 to the initial price of any model.

During the presentation Musk asked a volunteer to throw an object at the truck to test its “Tesla Armor Glass”. Unfortunately, the glass shattered, although during tests it remained untouched, Musk said, seemingly not very concerned about the mishap. The moment was caught on video.

In October, Tesla posted an unexpected quarterly profit and its shares gained by almost 20 per cent following the news. That was only the fourth time in five years that Tesla has posted a quarterly profit. The company made a loss of $600 million in the first half of 2019.
