Disney set to hit record $10-billion in box-office sales ahead of final Star Wars film
Disney global box-office sales total nearly $10 billion as Frozen 2 tops the charts
will pull in a record-breaking $10 billion (£7.6bn, €9bn) from global box-office sales this week, even before the release of its hotly anticipated final instalment of the Star Wars saga later this month. Disney’s Frozen 2 has topped the charts in theatres and it’s also enjoyed successes earlier this year with Avengers: Endgame and the remake of The Lion King.
Data from media analyst Comscore shows Disney has generated $3.28 billion in North America and $6.7 billion overseas for a global haul of $9.997 billion and is expected to officially cross the benchmark within the next day, according to Variety magazine.
In August this year, Disney achieved another milestone – having five films cross the $1-billion mark at the box office in a single year, with Avengers: Endgame, the highest-grossing film in history, which brought in $2.79 billion in ticket sales, along with Aladdin, Toy Story 4, The Lion King and Captain Marvel.
Frozen 2, which marks the return of princesses Anna and Elsa to the big screen, has already earned $920 million since its release, making it the likely sixth title in the $1-billion-plus club, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker could become the seventh after the final film in the Skywalker saga arrives in theatres on December 20.
“Disney has had an unbelievable year at the box office in 2019 and the international component of that success clearly demonstrates the power of the brand not just in the US market, but with fans the world over,” CNBC quoted Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian as saying.
