Travelex shuts down following New Years Eve cyber attack

Travelex has been forced to shut down its online services and app following a cyber attack on New Year’s Eve.

The London-based currency exchange said a software virus had “compromised some of its services”, prompting the decision to take their systems offline as a "precautionary measure".

"Our investigation to date shows no indication that any personal or customer data has been compromised," Travelex said in a statement on Twitter.

At the time of writing, the Travelex UK website is inaccessible, with a runtime error notice. The company’s internal email system is reportedly also down.

Travelex branches remain in operation but workers have been forced to use calculators for customer transactions.

The company has called in the help of third-party cybersecurity professionals to work with their internal IT teams in isolating the malware infection.

Travelex has over 1,200 locations, more than 1,000 ATMs and operates in 70 countries. It’s 2018 group revenue was £826m ($1bn, €970m).
