China warns France against excluding Huawei from 5G

By Elena Berton

The Chinese embassy in France fears Huawei might be discriminated against as the French government prepares the auction of its 5G network.

China has urged France not to discriminate against Huawei as the French government prepares the auction of its 5G mobile network in April, saying it feared the Chinese telecom equipment maker would face more hurdles than rivals.

The Chinese embassy in France said on its website that it was “shocked and worried” by media reports that Huawei could face restrictions in several French cities.

Huawei, a global giant in telecoms network equipment, is mired in international controversy as the US seeks to convince allies to ban the company from their mobile networks over espionage concerns.

Both Huawei and the Chinese government have denied allegations that the company’s technology could allow back-door spying.

“We do not wish to see the development of European companies in China affected due to discrimination against Huawei and protectionism in France and other European countries,” the statement said.

Huawei’s 5G equipment is totally safe and has never presented any “backdoor” lapses, the statement from the embassy added.

France’s main mobile operator, Orange, has already chosen Nokia and Ericsson to supply its 5G telecom equipment.

However, two other French carriers, SFR and Bouygues Telecom, which rely on Huawei for their 4G networks, have yet to name their 5G partners.

The UK government has faced a backlash from the US following a decision to allow Huawei a limited in its 5G networks.
