The New England Patriots are to offer a free, virtual commemorative ticket in the form of an NFT to eligible fans attending the 2 January home game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Season ticket members, single game buyers and secondary purchasers within the league’s ticketing network who scan their ticket at Sunday’s game may be eligible. However, only one commemorative virtual ticket is available per order or account, regardless of the number of tickets purchased, and only the purchaser of the ticket can receive the NFT.

The drop is part of the National Football League’s (NFL) NFT ticket program operating on the Polygon platform. Some tickets, with prices starting at a few hundred dollars, have already dropped from teams such as the Pittsburgh Steelers, Indianapolis Colts, San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs.

The virtual season

Back in November, the Patriots and the NFL’s 31 other teams issued 100 team-specific NFTs for fans to purchase at $10 each.

Earlier, the NFL, alongside The National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) and Dapper Labs, announced a collaboration to create digital video highlight NFTs for NFL fans.

The plan will allow fans to collect clips from some of the most important plays from NFL history. The NFL explained: “The deal aims to drive fan engagement by letting fans collect digital video moments of the best plays of the season using Dapper Labs’ cutting-edge blockchain technology.”

Steve Scebelo, president of NFL Players Inc, the marketing and licensing arm of the NFLPA, said: “The nature of the NFT captures what is special about sports fandom. Our players are immensely excited for the NFLPA, in working with our enterprising partners at Dapper Labs and OneTeam, to make this significant push into the digital collectibles market.”

He added that the standing of NFL players would “continue to fuel memorable moments” across the season to deepen their connection with fans.
