Sport Lisboa (SL) Benfica have become the first Portuguese football club to partner with Chiliz, the global blockchain provider for the sports industry, and unveil a new Fan Token on the engagement and reward app Socios.com.

SL Benfica play in the Primeira Liga, the top flight of Portuguese football. The SL Benfica Fan Token will allow fans to vote in polls, earn rewards, enjoy VIP experiences, and access games, competitions and exclusive offers on the app.

Additionally, Fan Token holders are entitled to receive “unique digital rewards, including non-fungible tokens (NFTs), as well as merchandise and match-worn jerseys, while being eligible to access exclusive discounts linked to club sponsors and other special offers and incentives linked to major brands.”

According to Chiliz, more than 1.5 million users from 167 different countries have downloaded the Socios.com app.

Six Premier League teams use Fan Tokens

In the UK, six Premier League clubs have also launched Fan Tokens with Socios.com, they are Crystal Palace Football Club, Aston Villa, Leeds United, Everton, Arsenal and Manchester City.

Other major European clubs that are working with Socios.com and have Fan Tokens include Juventus FC, Atletico Madrid, AS Roma, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and AC Milan.

In February, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), which organises Europe’s Champions League, also signed a Global Licencing and Regional Sponsorship agreement with Socios.com. This made the fan engagement and reward app the Global Licensing Partner and Official Fan Token Partner of the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Europa Conference League and UEFA Super Cup.

In addition, the UEFA partnership made Socios.com a regional sponsor of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Super Cup for the 2021-2024 cycle in the US.
