Ryanair could receive 737 MAX delivery by April

CMO of Ryanair tells press conference delivery date for 10 737 MAX aircraft will be brought forward

Ryanair passengers could by jetting off on their holidays in a 737 MAX this summer, as the airline is hoping to receive a delivery of up to 10 aircraft by April.

Ryanair has up to 210 of the grounded 737 MAX on order, but the first batch wasn't due until October. However, chief marketing officer Kenny Jacobs told a press conference in Madrid, this date has been brought forward.

"We now think we will get it in March or April this year, looks more like April than March, and we think we will get up to 10 MAX aircraft," Jacobs said.

"It could still mean less than ten and the date could still change. It has been a moving feast and the dates have slipped up to now for the past months”

However, as Jacobs explained, the decision is down to regulators.

The 737 MAX hasn't flown since March 2019, following two fatal air crashes in October 2018 and March 2019, which killed a total of 346 people.

There have since been revelations about Boeing staff criticising the aircraft, with one employee saying the airplane has been “designed by clowns”.

"We still think the MAX is a great aircraft. Our focus, their [Boeing's] focus now is just to get the MAX flying," said Jacobs.

However, Ryanair stands by Boeing's fastest seller.

Ryanair had been due to take delivery of 58 planes, but these numbers have been reduced to just 20.

As a result it dropped its passenger traffic forecast for the year to March 31 2021, down to 156 million from 157 million. However, the airline has since raised its profit forecast for the year to the end of March 2020 after “stronger than expected” performance over Christmas and New Year.
