Samsung launches robot companion at CES

New gadget can control smart devices to help with household chores

First there was Siri then Alexa, now homes around the globe could be shouting ‘’Hey Ballie” thanks to a new robot from Samsung.

Samsung's CEO of consumer electronics, HS Kim, unveiled its tennis-balled sized robot at CES 2020 tech conference in Las Vegas.

The gadget uses AI to follow its owner around, taking photos of "special moments". It can also be used as a security device and a remote control for smart devices in the home, to help with household chores.

The rolling robot, “understands you, supports you, and reacts to your needs”.

A video on Samsung’s Twitter feed shows Ballie opening smart curtains, putting on the washing machine, and getting a robotic vacuum cleaner to clean up after the dog. (The message is clear, smart robot, daft dog. Although we’re not quite sure how long this ball would last with most mutts).

Ballie can also act as a fitness assistant and is described as "an all-around life companion that helps you live a fuller, happier life".

In addition to the new robotic companion, Samsung unveiled augmented reality glasses that can be teamed up with it latest version of GEMS (Gait Enhancing and Motivation System), a robotic exoskeleton that gives you an immersive – albeit slightly unconventional – workout.
