Sony and AMC offer Spider-Man NFTs in joint ticket promotion
AMC Theatres is offering cinemagoers the chance to get a limited-edition Spider-Man NFT
AMC Theatres joined the metaverse as the US cinema chain launched a joint ticket promotion with Sony Pictures to offer cinemagoers the chance to get their hands on an exclusive Spider-Man NFT.
The idea, suggested on Twitter by crypto enthusiasts to AMC Entertainment CEO Adam Aron, prompted AMC’s online ticketing traffic to soar on Sunday night and Monday morning “to the highest level ever in AMC’s entire history… We are sorry wait times got long with the unprecedented volumes,” Aron tweeted.
According to the company, members of its AMC Stubs Premiere, AMC Stubs A-List and AMC Investor Connect who advance purchase or reserve their opening-day ticket for Spider-Man: No Way Home will receive an exclusive Spider-Man NFT while stocks last. Only 86,000 NFTs will be made available for opening day advance ticket buyers.
The series features more than 100 NFT designs, which have been created by powerhouse animation studio, Cub Studios, which has won BAFTA and Lovie awards for its work. The total production of these Sony/AMC NFTs is expected to be limited to an overall quantity of 90,000.
“The special Spider-Man: No Way Home joint effort of Sony Pictures and AMC Entertainment marks the first-ever NFT promotion by a major theatrical exhibitor,” said AMC Theatres in a statement.
Tickets for Spider-Man: No Way Home went on sale at AMC today, 29 November, while the movie opens exclusively in cinemas on 16 December.
The NFT giveaway
The NFT giveaway is valid only for tickets purchased or reserved for showtimes on the 16 December at AMC’s cinemas in the US.
To qualify for an NFT, tickets must be purchased or reserved by members of AMC Stubs A-List, Premiere or Investor Connect on AMCTheatres.com or the AMC mobile app, according to company.
Members must have their AMC Stubs account number associated with the transaction, and the movie ticket must be scanned at the cinema when the guest arrives for the film. If the ticket purchase is refunded or the ticket goes unused or is not scanned, the NFT code will not be delivered.
“With just 86,000 NFTs available through this particular promotion, these tickets are expected to go quickly. Guests should note that NFT codes and redemption instructions will be delivered to those who qualify via email on 22 December 2021, and the NFT must be redeemed by 1 March 2022, at 11:59:59pm ET,” said the company.
The Spider-Man NFT can be redeemed at a dedicated site operated by the Worldwide Asset eXchange (WAX), the first certified carbon neutral blockchain. WAX is the most used blockchain in the world processing 15 million transactions daily.
Spider-Man: No Way Home
Spider-Man: No Way Home is the third Spider-Man film to be produced by Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios. The film stars Tom Holland, who plays the role of high-schooler Peter Parker and his alias, Spider-Man.

AMC Entertainment’s Aron said: “Our AMC Theatres guests and our AMC Entertainment shareholders have been calling for AMC to get into the world of NFTs, and we couldn’t imagine a more perfect way to start doing so than with our good friends at Sony Pictures.”
