Tesla’s Musk says orders for Cybertruck electric SUV hit 200,000

Musk shrugs off unexpected smashed windows in lavish Cybertruck unveil

Tesla founder Elon Musk suggested in a tweet on Sunday that orders for the company’s electric Cybertruck SUV had already hit 200,000 – this came within days of the billionaire unveiled his latest offering in a presentation that went slightly awry.

The Cybertruck, a silver futuristic pick-up truck made with an “exoskeleton” of stainless steel and specialised armour glass, will accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 2.9 seconds and have a range of up to 500 miles.

During the presentation Musk had several assistants display the resilience of the truck that he called “bulletproof”, by hitting the doors with sledgehammers and throwing stainless steel balls at the windows. Both windows smashed in an unexpected turn of events for Musk, who shrugged off the gaffe on Twitter later on.

“(The) Sledgehammer impact on door cracked base of glass, which is why the steel ball didn’t bounce off. (We) should have done steel ball on window, *then* sledgehammer the door. Next time …,” Musk tweeted to his 29 million followers.

In an earlier tweet, Musk had said the company had received 146,000 orders for Cybertruck, which will enter into production in late 2021. The cost of the basic model comes in at $39,900 (£30,982).

Musk tweeted again on Sunday, by just saying “200K”, apparently referring to the increased number of orders.
