Moelis & Company, a New York-based investment bankannounced on Monday that it will create a dedicated blockchain advisory group to provide a bespoke service to both its institutional clients as well as emerging crypto and Web 3.0 firms.

The investment firm, which was founded in 2007 by billionaire Ken Moelis, confirmed that the newly-formed division will be led by John Momtazee and include a team of senior bankers from a variety of sectors, all of whom have significant experience in advising blockchain companies.

Momtazee said: “With more than 50 unicorns and several decacorns in the sector already and nearly $20bn of capital raised for blockchain companies last year, blockchain technology is poised to be as transformative to the global business landscape as the internet was in the late 90s.

“Despite the current volatility, we see strong long-term prospects for its application and an increasing need for high-quality strategic advice, sources of capital to fund growth and liability management solutions.”

Joining global players

Moelis joins a number of other investment banks that are already active within the crypto space.

Last year, Morgan Stanley launched its own cryptocurrency research team, in a bid to keep up with the significance of cryptocurrencies and digital assets.

Goldman Sachs has also ventured into the crypto space, setting up a dedicated crypto team within the bank’s global currencies and emerging markets division, while JPMorgan Chase offers more than five different cryptocurrency funds to its wealth management clients.

Navid Mahmoodzadegan, co-founder of Moelis, said, “As leading investors increasingly look to participate in the substantial value creation that we expect blockchain technology will offer, Moelis & Company’s global platform and entrepreneurial spirit positions us well to help our clients leverage this significant opportunity.”
