US women’s professional basketball team Seattle Storm has announced a multi-year partnership with Coinbase, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the US.

The club, which competes in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) as a member of the league’s Western Conference, said the deal was “the first of its kind for a WNBA franchise”.

Seattle Storm NFTs

Coinbase plans to release Seattle Storm non-fungible tokens (NFTs) that will be launched on Coinbase NFT.

The crypto exchange will also be a presenting partner of all Seattle Storm Commissioner’s Cup games as the Storm looks to defend its cup title.

The Commissioner’s Cup is an in-season tournament between conference rivals during the first half of the regular season.

Coinbase will also join Force4Change, the women’s basketball team’s social justice platform, starting with a season-long initiative called The Blockchain. For every block by a Storm player during this season, $70 (£56) will be donated to TechBridge a non-profit organisation that uses technology to expand the impact of other non-profit companies.

Coinbase will also have a brand presence at the Climate Pledge Arena, the home stadium of the Seattle Storm.

Two Seattle Storm players, Jewell Loyd and Sue Bird, will become Coinbase brand ambassadors.

‘The best way to learn about crypto is by participating’

Jessica Williams, director of brand partnerships at Coinbase, said: “At Coinbase, we are dedicated to experiences that encourage fans to engage with the crypto economy, because the best way to learn about crypto is by participating.

“Our partnership with Seattle Storm is an opportunity to further both of our commitments to advancing economic freedom and educating fans and players in women’s sports around the benefits of Web 3.0.”

Nate Silverman, senior vice-president (SVP) of corporate partnerships and social responsibility for Seattle Storm, said: “We are excited to partner with Coinbase and that they are joining our Force4Changes efforts. Coinbase is investing in women’s sports, and we are thrilled that this partnership can showcase some exciting ways for fans to engage with the Coinbase and drive positive change.”
