0'>Alibaba Group Holding Ltd is a Chinese conglomerate that began life as a business-to-business marketplace in Hangzhou. Founded by Jack Ma, who enlisted the help of 17 friends, he wanted to help small- and medium-sized businesses in the country to export their wares around the world. Within six months of launch, the company received a $25m cash injection from SoftBank and Goldman Sachs, and profitability was achieved by 2002.

Away from its eCommerce businesses, the Alibaba company is also home to the world’s biggest mobile payment organisation. AliPay leapfrogged PayPal to the number-one position in 2013, and it is a major player in mainland China’s market – enjoying more than 50 per cent market share. A smartphone-based wallet enables consumers to pay bills, order food, purchase bus tickets and complete online purchases with most major Chinese retailers.

Looking back at Alibaba company history, the eCommerce giant holds the record of the world’s biggest-ever initial public offering. In 2014, its debut on the New York Stock Exchange raised $25bn, with shares sold to investors for $68 apiece. Within minutes of the market opening, prices soared by a third. Alibaba share price history has been modest since then and it was trading below its all-time high of $208 set in June 2018. Although the company has been considering an IPO in Hong Kong, this flotation has reportedly been delayed because of the US-China trade war.
