Scottish wind farm leads Amazon drive for renewable energy

Three new projects announced as company steps up efforts to cut carbon

Amazon has announced three new renewable energy projects, including one on the Kintyre Peninsula in Scotland, as part of its bid to reduce its carbon footprint.

The new Amazon Wind Farm will be the largest corporate wind power purchase agreement in Europe and will provide 50 megawatts of new renewable capacity. It is expected to generate 168,000 MW hours of clean energy annually, enough to power 46,000 UK homes.

The two other two renewable energy solar projects will be in the US – in Warren County, North Carolina, and Prince George County, Virginia.

Jeff Bezos’s behemoth has made a "climate pledge" to reach 80 per cent renewable energy by 2024 and 100 per cent by 2030. It is attempting to meet a target of net zero carbon by 2040.

The US projects total 215 MW and are expected to generate 500,997 MW hours of energy annually. This will be Amazon’s second renewable energy project in North Carolina and eighth in Virginia.

When complete, the three Amazon renewable energy wind and solar projects will provide 265 MW of additional renewable capacity. They are expected to begin producing power in 2021, supplying energy to the company’s Amazon Web Services data centres.

To date, Amazon has launched 18 utility-scale wind and solar renewable energy projects that will generate over 1,600 MW of renewable capacity and deliver more than 4.6 million MW hours of clean energy annually – enough to power 368,000 American households.
