Christie’s auction house has announced it will soon reveal details about when its latest non-fungible token (NFT), ARCADIA, will be auctioned off.

The ARCADIA NFT, whose estimated value is as yet unknown, will be one of the items going under the hammer on 9 November during the British auction house’s 21st Century Art Evening sale at the Rockefeller Center in New York City, US.

The work will be minted in October 2021 by Aorist – a cultural institution that supports a sustainable NFT marketplace powered by the Algorand blockchain.

About the ARCADIA NFT

The NFT is entitled ARCADIA: A Journey Through the 21C Existential Crisis, and is described by the auction house as a ”collaborative interdisciplinary NFT” by contemporary Argentinean visual artist Andrés Reisinger, Grammy award-winning, Portuguese-American musician André Allen Anjos, better known by his stage name RAC, and bestselling British poet Arch Hades.

Says Christie’s: “ARCADIA is a narrative poem illuminated through digital art and elevated with electronic music. It contains multitudes, linking literary art with a visual sermon.

“Through the five-chapter story, the authors explore concepts of modern-day anxiety and loneliness as by-products of cultural and societal constructs.

“Through Arcadia, these three artists – each a leading name within their respective fields – harmoniously fuse poetry, music and graphic art in a film that unpacks concepts of a collectively felt existential crisis experienced universally by humankind in our current era.”

Setting (and keeping) the bar

The ARCADIA NFT, seen by some as Christie’s’ effort to continue to remain at the forefront of the digital-art market, follows the debut of the NFT platform Metaverse by Sotheby’s.

Both world-leading international auction houses are challenging the status quo and pushing boundaries in the world of NFTs.

“This is simply one of the most beautiful, elegant and enigmatic works I’ve had the pleasure of presenting, and it’s been incredible working directly with the artists to bring this work to the world,” tweeted Noah Davis, Christie’s specialist head of digital sales and associate vice president of its Post-war and Contemporary Art Department.

“With ARCADIA, the artists have set a new bar for narrative and emotion in NFT-based art,” Davis added.

Other NFTs recently sold through Christie’s

As recently as this month, Christie’s also sold Twin Flames – a visual elegy by Justin Aversano honouring the life of the twin he never knew, which was the first NFT to be offered in a live photographic auction. The work realised 10 times its estimate, achieving $1.1m.

Also, in June, Christie’s presented Hello I’m Victor (FEWOCiOUS) and This Is My Life, an online auction of five digital artworks by crypto artist FEWOCiOUS, in which he unpacked the complexities of gender identity and coming-of-age issues. The sale totalled over $2.1m.
