Greenland picks Ericsson over Huawei for 5G rollout

Telecoms operator opts for Sweden’s Ericsson to supply equipment for its future 5G network in a further blow to Huawei

Greenland’s state telecoms operator Tele Greenland said it will use Ericsson equipment for its fifth-generation network rollout instead of Huawei.

The announcement comes days after Spain’s Telefonica said it planned to shrink the amount of equipment it buys from Huawei for the core of its 5G mobile networks in Europe.

“5G is coming to Greenland, but no date has been set for this yet. We do not see Huawei as a possible supplier of (Tele Greenland’s) 5G network,” its chief executive Kristian Reinert Davidsen said.

Earlier this year, privately held Danish telecoms operator TDC also picked Ericsson over Huawei for its 5G network.

Sweden’s Ericsson supplied the 4G equipment currently used by Tele Greenland. Last week it was picked by Norway’s Telenor as key technology provider of the country’s 5G network.

US president Donald Trump has pushed allies to exclude Huawei from lucrative 5G deals on espionage concerns.

Huawei is the largest maker of telecommunications equipment in the world and the world's second-largest smartphone manufacturer behind Samsung. It has denied its equipment can be used for spying.

The Chinese group now faces the prospect of losing ground against rivals Ericsson and Nokia in major European markets such as Germany and France.

Stephane Richard, chief executive of France's main mobile operator, Orange, told lawmakers that some fears surrounding Huawei are unfounded. France is formally launching the procedure for assigning 5G frequency licences.

Orange does not use Huawei equipment in France but does so in other key markets such as Spain, Poland and Africa.
