IBM launches blockchain app to trace source of coffee

The app called Thank My Farmer will let coffee consumers learn more about coffee and support the farmer who grew the beans

US tech giant IBM and Farmer Connect have announced a new app. It uses blockchain to connect coffee drinkers to the farmers who grew the beans.

The app called Thank My Farmer will let coffee consumers learn more about coffee and support the farmer who grew the beans. The app is based on the IBM Food Trust platform.

Thank My Farmer pulls information directly from the blockchain and connects the coffee drinker to farmers, traders, roasters and brands. It uses an interactive map to tell the bean's origin story.

IBM Blockchain helped create the Farmer Connect traceability platform. It worked with global coffee supply chain companies including Beyers Koffie, The Colombian Coffee Growers Federation, Itochu, Jacobs Douwe Egberts, The JM Smucker Company, and Yara International.

The new mobile app will launch to the general market at the beginning of 2020.

Users in the US and Canada will be able to scan QR codes on 1850 brand premium single-origin coffee. European consumers will be able to access the Thank My Farmer app through a new single-origin brand, Beyers 1769, roasted at Beyers Koffie.

IBM showcased the project this week at CES 2020, the big technology trade show in Las Vegas, and has already convened blockchain networks in areas including food safety, global shipping, trade finance, responsible mining, and more.
