LaLiga to turn memorable football moments into NFTs
This follows on from LaLiga’s partnership with Sorare to launch NFTs for all its players
Laliga, the top professional division of the Spanish football league system have announced a partnership with Dapper Labs, the non-fungible token (NFT) company, which will see the most memorable football moments from the past 10 seasons released as NFTs.
These NFTs will not be made available until June 2022 but will “give fans the opportunity to collect and own some of the most talked-about contemporary and iconic in-game moments from their favourite teams”.
Such moments from Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Atlético de Madrid and other LaLiga teams will be turned into NFTs via the Flow blockchain.
Dapper Labs is the company behind National Basketball Association (NBA) Top Shot, which allow fans to buy, sell and trade NBA moments as NFTs. All purchases once the NFTs are live can be made through a Dapper wallet.
The NFTs will educate fans on the LaLiga team’s past and the stories they hold. They will also allow to enter competitions to win tickets to see El Clasico, a match between rivals FC Barcelona and Real Madrid from a VIP box at Camp Nou, FC Barcelona’s stadium.
Mediapro, a multimedia communications group as a part of this partnership, will collaborate with LaLiga and Dapper Labs by providing the intellectual property (IP) rights of all the historical football footage.
Dapper Labs raise $250m in funding round
On 22 September Dapper Labs announced the company had received $250m (£182m) in a funding round led by Coatue, an investment management company, and Bond, another investment firm run by former Wall Street analyst Mary Meeker.
This new round takes the valuation of the Vancouver based NFT company to $7.6bn (£5.5bn).
This partnership “will bring us even closer to our fans worldwide”
Javier Tebas, president at LaLiga, said: “The partnership between LaLiga and Dapper Labs will bring us even closer to our fans worldwide through a new and growing medium, and alongside the industry partner that created the NFT video product for the NBA. This experience will place football fans all over the world at the very centre of the action, giving them a platform and product that allows them to enjoy and express their passion for LaLiga in a unique way.”
Caty Tedman, head of partnerships for Dapper Labs, said: “We couldn’t be more excited to be partnering with LaLiga to launch the ultimate fan-driven highlights collectible experience that is unlike anything in the space before. With over 3.5 billion football fans around the globe, the experience’s layered environment has the power to revolutionise how fans connect to the sport of football and how they engage with the teams and players they love, both virtually and in real life. We look forward to working alongside LaLiga, home to some of the best clubs on the planet, to bring this wildly new and dynamic fan-driven experience to football lovers everywhere.”
LaLiga partners with Sorare to launch NFTs for all its players
Recently, Laliga announced another foray into the world of NFTs and partnered with French NFT football trading card game developer Sorare to launch NFTs for its players.
All 20 teams in the LaLiga will be offering NFTs for every player in the league.
According to LaLiga this will give fans the chance to “freely trade and play with digital cards of players” for the first time. Sorare’s mission is to build “the game within the game” and it plans to partner with every one of the world’s top 20 football leagues by the end of 2022.
Bayern Munich, Juventus and Liverpool already have NFTs on the platform.
