Opera becomes first high profile browser to enable Bitcoin payment

Users can now to buy goods and services on e-commerce sites with crypto

Norwegian web browser company Opera, which is listed on the NASDAQ exchange, has become the first big browser to enable its users to make direct Bitcoin payments.

Opera’s 350 million users across the globe (which is 3 per cent of the world's browser market) can now send and receive Bitcoin via the browser and use it for buying goods and services on e-commerce sites. The browser also enables adding a Bitcoin and TRON card into its crypto wallet to keep tabs on transactions.

The company, which has a history of innovation and was first with key updates such as private browsing and tabbed browsing, went live with the feature on October 21.

Opera has been experimenting with crypto payments made via its browser for a while now. It announced the integration of a cryptocurrency wallet in 2018 and began enabling users to purchase items using Ether in February 2019.

Charles Hamel, head of crypto at Opera, believes that the integration of Bitcoin is a logical next step for the company.

“We believe that opening our browser to more blockchains, including Bitcoin, is the logical next step to making our solution more relevant to anyone who has a Bitcoin crypto wallet and would like to do things with their cryptocurrencies beyond just keeping them in an account.”

Opera has recently unveiled Web 3 (decentralised, semantic web) products including a Web 3 explorer, which enables users to conduct transactions and interact with Web 3.
