Square company profile: what it does and who runs it
Square specialises in digital payments. It was founded by Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and businessman Jim McKelvey in 2009 in St Louis, Missouri, US. However, if you want to know where the Square company is located now, it’s in San Francisco, not far from Twitter HQ. When it comes to who owns the Square company, Dorsey is still a major player, owning 24.4% of the business. Other investors include former Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer, Napster founder Shaun Fanning and 1990s rapper MC Hammer. Square’s company profile was raised after it announced it would allow staff to continue working from home after the pandemic.
Square’s most notable products are the Square Reader, which allows card payments to be accepted on mobile phones, the Square Stand, which helps Apple iPads process payments, the Square Register, a stand-alone payment system for small and medium-sized businesses, and the Terminal, which prints receipts and accepts chip, swipe and contactless payments. Square also owns the mobile payment app Cash App.
