Tamil Nadu to announce pioneering policy on blockchain and AI

Southern India commercial hub says is will have ‘first ethical guidelines’ on artificial intelligence

India’s tenth-largest state, Tamil Nadu, is working on a state-level policy for blockchain technology and artificial intelligence (AI).

The Times of India reported that the southern state is working on separate policies for the two sectors, which are expected to be approved in the next eight to ten days.

The blockchain and AI policies are expected to establish ground rules on how the state government can apply the emerging technologies for service delivery and solving governance issues.

The metropolitan area of state capital Chennai is one of the largest municipal economies in India, with more than a third of India's automobile industry based there.

The AI policy will be “perhaps the world’s first policy addressing safe and ethical use of AI,” Santosh Misra, CEO of Tamil Nadu’s e-Governance Agency (TNeGA), said.

Chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami recently announced a blockchain platform created by the TNeGA for better e-service, according to the Times of India.

The platform will enable a system for government service delivery and allow citizens to get some identity certificates without having to apply.

Chennai recently became the first city in south India to get direct flights to Tokyo.
