The rise of crypto influencers

The rise of cryptocurrencies has led to an entirely new demographic of investors. Investing is no longer confined to pension funds or wealthy individuals with financial planners. The low entry costs and potential huge returns of the cryptocurrency marketplace haveencouraged individuals across the world with vastly diverging backgrounds, to get involved in trading.

Whether or not individuals, regardless of how little expertise they possess in investing, should be given total access to play such notoriously risky and unregulated market is up for discussion. The reality is that more and more people are piling in, hoping to get rich quick. And since they know little about markets and investing, they look for easily accessible guidance – hence the rise of the crypto influencers

Historically, accessibility to the expertise and services provided by financial experts, has, like traditional markets themselves, been confined to a small portion of society. This is in part due to the high cost of this sort of knowledge, but also due to the stringent regulatory framework dictated by organisation such as the FCA in the UK and the SEC in the US, which institutions and experts alike have to abide by. Crypto, called by some the “Wild West”, is unregulated meaning anyone, regardless of personal interests, can publish crypto news, expertise or recommendations.

Cryptocurrencies as an allegedly popularist, democratic alternative to traditional forms of investment, find their perfect platform on all kinds of social media channels. Across the world people can tap into Twitter, Instagram or even TikTok to consume endless (self-styled) insights about the next big coin. Cryptocurrency commentators, in turn, many of whom may hold certain coins, can, to their increasing following, have the power to raise the exposure of any crypto project they wish to. They can pump up coins and partake in a variety of what would be considered in traditional financial markets, brazen market manipulation.

Putting aside the morality of having these self-styled crypto 'experts' preaching to possibly naïve investors, it is evident that the demand for this information is increasing. Twitter is one of the main platforms that the crypto influencers favour. So who are the top ten crypto influencers on Twitter,  and why?

Top crypto twitter influencers

It is difficult to ascertain the most influential individual in the crypto world. But Vitalik Buterin comes up pretty high on the list of biggest crypto influencers on Twitter.

The founder of Ethereum, Buterin frequently posts insights about Ethereum in particular, including reviews, articles, interviews and commentaries. More than 3.3 million followers now keep track of Buterin's latest pronouncements.

Elon Musk, with 74.1 million followers, is perhaps the most influential figure on the crypto twitter scene. The CEO of Tesla and Space X, Musk has tweeted extensively about crypto. As a holder of bitcoin as well as a host of other coins, most famously meme coins, Musk has been accused of using his influence to manipulate the prices of these coins.

In May 2021, the price of Bitcoin dropped significantly after Musk tweeted thatTesla would no longer accept the crypto as payment. In June, after posting a cryptic tweet suggesting he had sold off a portion of his bitcoin wealth, the price of Bitcoin dropped even further.

In turn, his tweeting about coins such as dogecoin have led to them surging in value. The cult of personality which surrounds Musk means he has the power to seriously impact the sentiment around crypto.

Anthony Pompliano, with 1.5 million followers, is another important figure on the crypto stage and arguably one of the best crypto influencers on Twitter. He invests in early-stage start-ups, shares news, insights and recommendations as well as hosting interviews. Pompliano, nicknamed “Pomp”, is based in Miami, and also co-founded a multi-strategy investment firm called Morgan Creek Digital Assets in 2018.

With one million followers, Brian Armstrong CEO and co-founder of major exchange Coinbase, is also one of the top crypto twitter influencers. He shares updates about developments on Coinbase, as well as news and political opinions on his social media site. Armstrong is also the founder of Give Crypto, a philanthropic organisation for those in need. He is a staunch supporter of the economic freedom which crypto could allegedly bring.

Charlie Lee is up on the list as one of the best crypto analysts to follow. The creator of Litecoin and ex-director of engineering at Coinbase, Lee has a deal of expertise in the crypto sector. Sharing news, analysis and opinions about the major developments in the crypto world, Lee has a following of one million on Twitter.

With more than 700,000 followers, Andreas Antonopoulos is another important crypto twitter influencer. The host of the well-regarded podcast “Let’s take Bitcoin”, Antonopoulos discusses a range of crypto issues in depth, specifically focusing on Bitcoin. He is also the author of “Mastering Bitcoin”, an in-depth technical explanation of how Bitcoin works for the average person.

Mike Novogratz is another one of the top crypto influencers on Twitter. A US-based investor, Novogratz is CEO of Galaxy Investment partners, which focuses entirely on investing in the crypto space. He is worth nearly $700m, and nearly half of Novogratz wealth comes from crypto assets. With close to half a million followers on Twitter, Novogratz tweets on crypto-related subjects.

Roger Ver is arguably also high up there on the list of crypto influencers. An early investor in start-ups including BitPay, Ripple, Purse.io and Kraken, Ver has amassed nearly 750,000 Twitter followers. A keen supporter of Bitcoin Cash, Ver posts and shares extensively on the social medial platform about all things crypto.

Lastly, Tyler Winklevoss is another major crypto twitter influencer. The owner of the crypto exchange Gemini and an early investor in Bitcoin, Winklevoss has one million followers. He regularly shares insights and opinions about developments in the cryptocurrency world.

Final thoughts

While much debate rages over whether crypto influencers should have as much unregulated power as they do, or how the market moves, it is acknowledged that information from these major crypto figures is an important source of knowledge for cryptocurrency investors.

Difficult to say, but Elon Musk is definitely the most notorious. His tweets have had a dramatic impact on the rise or fall of particular coins, specifically Bitcoin and Dogecoin.

Anthony Pompliano is a famous crypto analyst. He offers a range of insights and chart analyses on a variety of coins.

Potentially. It is still a very nacent industry so many analysts think there is still plenty of lucrative investment possibilities within the space.

It is always worth remembering, however, that the crypto market is highly volatile and the price of all tokens and coins can go down as well as up. Never invest any money you cannot afford to lose.
