Before the start of the G20 summit, which takes place in Osaka, Japan, on 28-29 June, Trump briefly spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The leaders have not seen each other since U.S. prosecutor Robert Mueller finished his investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

Speaking to Putin, Trump wagged his finger and urged: “Don't meddle in the election, please.” The American leader also made a joke about “getting rid” of the journalists.

Apart from that, the two presidents agreed that the U.S. and Russia should continue improving their relationship to defuse tensions on an international level. Trump and Putin also discussed the latest developments in Iran, Syria, Venezuela, and Ukraine.

Trump and Putin first met each other officially during a summit in Helsinki in July 2018. Later in 2018, the two leaders were expected to meet at the G20 summit in Buenos Aires. However, Trump cancelled the appointment after Russia detained Ukrainian ships in the Sea of Azov.

On Saturday, June 29, Trump is set to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on the margins of the G20 to discuss the mutually imposed tariffs that are part of the ongoing trade war between the two countries.
